How to plan the weekend

How to plan the weekend

Hello my friends, and welcome back. I'm happy to tell you that Lost is in the weekend is growing, so we are working on new contents to make it more interesting and useful. Today this post is starting the new Travel Tips section. Here I want to share with you some tips and best practices that will help you to plan the weekend.

Of course lostintheweekend should be your first reference to organize your travels!

Book your flight

Statistics say that the best timing to book a flight is 7/10 weeks in advance, better on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.
Additionally a best practice is to cancel cookies and browser history before booking, because these are used to profile customers and modify prices. If you act like this, you will find the best deals!

Now, coming to which app or site to use I suggest Skyscanner and Google flights. They are both very good in identifying the best options, and they are very easy to use. You can select one-way, return or multi-city combinations. With Google you can also choose based on the travel type (nature, culture, adventure...), while Skyscanner let you monitor prices changes over the
time. Another app you can use is Hopper, this prove the future changes of prices for a specific air route, telling you how long you can wait before the prices will increase, and suggests you the best options. I found this more useful for long range flights, give it a try.

Where to stay

I use to check Boooking and Airbnb for the scope. Both them have also small city guides where describe and suggest you where to stay based on your type of travel.

If you have used Booking before you could be already a "Genius" so have special offers! When you search your accommodation flag "Show Genius discounts first". If you are not, don't worry all you need to do is travel! Generally, I filter the results, with my Budget per night, Review Score 7+ according to similar people (couples, single travellers, group of friends..) and the District. Then try to look for rooms with free cancellation fares. This is the best strength of booking.

Airbnb is a completely different approach. Here people are hosting you in their houses. Also here I filter the results by selecting Entire home and Price range. Then what is very important is to review comments to be sure that the host is not used to cancel the booking with short notice. Before booking try also to text the host asking for a small discount, sometimes this can work! Here you don't have free cancellation bookings, but you can use my promo code here to have 25€ discount, not bad.

Use Kayak to collect all your bookings and reference codes all in one place. You just need an account, and then simply fwd the booking confirmations you receive via email to kayak trip address. Easy peasy!

Where to go

Check if in the city Uber Pop is available, if yes this is a relief. This can help you visiting the city with a reasonable price. I usually prefer to walk the city as much as I can, because this is the best way to find new places. But in case I need to cover long distances, Uber is always the best choice. Use my code 98aav to have a free ride of max 10€.

To find restaurants or food spots, TripAdvisor can be useful, for some places you can book a table directly from the app. Try also with TheFork to reserve a table if available. Very often here you can find special discounts.

For nightlife Facebook is the best. Find places with great reviews and many followers, see the available events and send messages to the PRs to be on guest-lists.

Tips and tricks

  • Try to book flights with hand bags only. These are cheaper but, be sure to double check the weight and size (refer to my previous article for more info http://www.lostintheweekend.com/2016/02/15/hand-luggage/)
  • Locate your transparent bag with <100ml liquids and your iPadNotebook on top of your bag. This to save time during security controls.
  • Here avoid queues with old people or children, if you are in hurry.
  • Be careful with the reviews, try to read as much comments you can. Many places now pays lots of money to have good reviews! For this reason you should trust more Lost in the weekend!
  • Meet new people wherever you go. That's one of the best part of traveling, and locals can give you the best suggestions.
