Hey hey hey, welcome back. Here in Italy spring seems to be faded away already. If wherever you are, you are experiencing the same, well, it's time to do something. If you are asking yourself which could be a place where you can enjoy the sun, having fun and good food, weekend in Athens is the answer! This is a city full of contrasts, you can see typical white houses with blue roof in Santorini style, and next to it a brand new design building. Then you pass the corner and and ancient temple will stand in front of you. It's very peculiar, you'll either love or hate it, but it definitely worth a visit!
I wanna thanks Irina, Laura and Adonis for the great advices!
Where to stay
Listen, I could suggest you different places but, there is one which is above all. It was one of my best stay, ever! Live in Athens is a group of friends, Andreas, Andonis, Vassilis and Varnavas, who manage different apartments in the heart of Athens. In the website the say they have one goal: "show to the visitors the best of the city and make them feel at home!" , and I can assure you this is what they do. During my stay, Adonis suggested me many places and gave me great suggestions to enjoy the real Athens. He gave me also a custom map made by friends, with a description of the best places around, to live the city like a local.
My apartment was in Agion Anargyron, in Psiri. This neighborhood is full of life, restaurants and street art. Needless to say it was perfect, clean and well furnished. There was also a terrace one floor above, where to enjoy Akropolis view, chill and eat fresh strawberries right away from the plant!
They have more then 10 apartments so when you plan your stay in Athens this is the place to stay!
Where to eat
You will find a restaurant or taverna, every 10 steps, and many of them serve good food. Essentially because greek food is amazing. However find below my favorite places:
Fidelio is a kind of greek tapas bar in Psiri. You won't see many tourists here, it's a small taverna popular for locals. If you like seafood, then go to Ammos restaurant in the port of Pireus by the sea- location Mikrolimano, Pireas. Little far from the city center, but food is great. To eat the real moussaka go to Iordanis in Psiri. If you don't know what moussaka is, shame on you! It's one of the most typical and delicious thing you can have in Greece. Find here the recipt. Another gastronomic speciality I love is souvlaki and Gyristroula in front of Thissio undergroud is very good. Finally Zaxos in Glifada square for gyros and the best greek fast food.
Where to enjoy Athens' atmosphere
Brettos distillery in Plaka is the second oldest bar in Europe. Great atmosphere and great selcetion of traditional Greek spirits. Try Ouzo and some aromatic liqueurs.
I love gin, and in Athens there is a place called Gin Joint with a selection of more than 70 gins from all over the world! Try the German Monkey 47, and the classic Scottish Henrick's.
A for Athens rooftop bar in down town Athens with the view of Acropolis- location: Monastiraki square.
Area Thisio, lots of small nice bars, coffee shops, nice place with view. One of them called 'thisio view'. Streets full of people, small food tavernas etc.
Note: During the weekend visit the flea market in Adrianou
Athens nightlife will surprise you. Both downtown and by the sea there are areas full of interesting places.
Gazi, full of bars and small clubs. Best ones socialist and why sleep. This is the Party area where everyone goes for party and drinks, better during the weekends. Glifada area, by the sea, more posh than Gazi, Really good bars, after mid night crazy party on weekends , becomes a dance place. Kolonaki is another area full of clubs like Bogart,Rock n Roll, Mind the gap and Dybbuk. Finally if you look for tecnoelecto night, six d.o.g.s. is the place.
Note: Try to avoid Omonia area during then night. It's down town, but very dodgy
